Inflammation

Inflammation is nature’s way of protecting us from infection and foreign substances. It is a protective biological response wherein the body’s white blood cells and protective chemicals shield us from infection by bacteria and viruses, and from substances which are foreign to the body. Based on duration, inflammation may be acute or chronic.

Acute inflammation is the body’s first responder to any harmful stimuli and involves increased movement of plasma and white blood cells, especially granulocytes from the blood into the affected area. This triggers a cascade of biochemical events which accelerate the inflammatory response. The inflammation process involves the local vascular system, immune system, and various cells within the injured tissue working together to fight off the offender at the first instance.

Prolonged inflammation, known as chronic inflammation, leads to a progressive shift in the type of cells present at the site of inflammation. There is simultaneous destruction and healing of the affected tissues during the inflammatory process. This process is what causes the undesirable symptoms in chronic inflammatory diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis, and sarcoidosis.

In some diseases, the body’s immune system inappropriately triggers an inflammatory response when there are no foreign substances to fight off. These diseases, called autoimmune diseases, are seen when the body’s normally protective immune system causes damage to its own tissues.

A balance in the body’s immune system is absolutely essential in maintaining good health and function. Dietary supplements containing natural anti-inflammatory properties are a good way to maintain this unsteady balance.

NutriNZ Green Lipped Mussel: 4,000mg/90 VegeCaps

Green Lipped Mussels contain a type of carbohydrate complex that prevents neutrophils from attacking the body’s cells. Inflammation is basically a process by which various cells in the body, including the neutrophils try to neutralize any foreign stimuli including virus or bacteria from harming the body. Even though inflammation is a protective mechanism, excessive inflammation can lead to damage and in certain conditions such as asthma and arthritis the inflammatory process becomes the primary evil that one has to fight against on a daily basis. Green lipped mussels have the ability to supress this inflammatory process, particularly in chronic inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and bronchial asthma.
